Taoran (陶然) means the quiet contentment found in making things by hand. We bring the warmth of Chinese ceramic tradition into British homes — one handmade cup at a time.
Our founder spent a month in Jingdezhen, China's millennium-old porcelain capital, watching master artisans throw, trim, glaze, and fire. The rhythm of the wheel and the patience of the kiln made one thing clear: the world's best ceramics are still made by hand, by people whose families have done this for generations.
Over two years, we built relationships with five family studios across Jingdezhen, Longquan, and Dehua. We didn't just source products — we learned their techniques, their clay recipes, their firing traditions. We became partners, not buyers.
We launched Taoran Ceramics with a simple belief: the objects you use every day should carry meaning. Our first collection — 12 pieces from three studios — sold out in six weeks. It turned out British homes were ready for ceramics with soul.
We expanded to work with eight artisan families and opened our UK fulfilment centre. We added seasonal collections that follow the rhythm of the kilns — spring celadons, autumn tenmokus, winter porcelains. Every piece still comes from a studio where we know the artisan by name.
We visit our studios twice a year. We watch the firing. We drink tea from the cups we sell. We're building something slow and lasting — a bridge between the world's oldest ceramic tradition and the modern British home. We'd love for you to be part of it.
No middlemen, no wholesalers, no factories. We work directly with artisan families and pay them fairly for their craft. When you buy from Taoran, your money reaches the person who made your cup.
A single cup can take weeks from clay to kiln. We don't rush our artisans. The best things are made slowly, and the firing schedule doesn't bend to quarterly targets.
Small-batch production, natural mineral glazes, wood-fired kilns, and materials that return to the earth. Traditional craft has been sustainable for centuries — we just continue the practice.
We price our pieces to sustain the artisan, cover careful shipping from China, and keep Taoran running. No artificial markups, no fake discounts. The price you see reflects the real cost of handmade.
Every order ships in recyclable and compostable packaging. No plastic wrap, no polystyrene, no guilt. Your cup arrives wrapped the way it was made — with care and natural materials.
Every piece comes with its story: which studio made it, what technique was used, how to care for it. We believe understanding what you own makes it more meaningful.
Every cup has a story. Every story starts with clay, fire, and human hands. Explore our collection and find the piece that speaks to you.
